Brass gets the headlines — it's machinable, corrosion-resistant, and conductive. But precision component programs rarely use only one metal. The right material depends on the job, and the right surface finish often matters just as much as the base metal. Here's a buyer's overview of the options.

The metals, and when to use them

  • Brass — excellent machinability and conductivity, naturally corrosion-resistant. The default for fittings, connectors and turned parts. Lead-free grades available for potable-water and medical use.
  • Stainless steel (304, 316, 303) — for strength, hygiene and harsh/corrosive environments. 316 for marine and chemical exposure.
  • Copper (ETP, oxygen-free) — maximum electrical and thermal conductivity; bus bars, earthing and electrical contacts.
  • Aluminium (6061, 6082, 6063) — lightweight with good machinability; where weight matters.
  • Steel & specials — mild, carbon and alloy steel, phosphor bronze and gunmetal for specific strength or wear requirements.

Why the finish matters

The surface finish protects the part, changes its appearance, and can be a compliance requirement. Common options include:

  • Electroplating — nickel, chrome, tin, zinc, silver or gold for corrosion resistance, conductivity or appearance.
  • Coatings — GEOMET, ZINTEK and trivalent zinc for high corrosion resistance and RoHS compliance.
  • Anodizing (aluminium) — clear, colour, hard or black for durability and finish.
  • Mechanical finishes — polishing, brushing, blasting, vibratory and barrel finishing.
  • Treatments — passivation, blackening, and anti-tarnish for stability and shelf life.
Specify the environment and the requirement — corrosion, conductivity, appearance or compliance — and the right metal-plus-finish combination follows.
